Injured Climber Rescued
Injured Climber Rescued
At about 2.30 pm today a 30
year old Dunedin woman suffered a leg injury whilst climbing
on the footstool area of Mitre Peak, Milford Sound.
The partner of the injured woman had made his way back down to the base of Mitre Peak and paddled his kayak to Milford village to raise the alarm.
Te Anau Police were contacted at 7.15 p.m and co-ordinated a rescue.
A winch equipped Southern Lakes helicopter crewed with a doctor and paramedic flew to the site. The climber was located and winched from the site.
She was airlifted to Kew hospital in Invercargill suffering a suspected broken ankle.
Sergeant
Tod Hollebon of Te Anau Police Search and Rescue advised
that although the outcome was favourable, carrying a means
of communication such as an Emergency Locator Beacon would
have given the couple a much faster response to the
emergency situation they
faced.
