Potential Tsunami Threat to New
Zealand – not Napier
The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) has issued a Tsunami Potential Threat to New Zealand advisory for North Cape, Auckland West, East Cape, Gisborne, Auckland East, New Plymouth and Wellington.
At present, there is no
threat to Napier.
The
tsunami risk is a result of a magnitude 8 earthquake that
occurred at 2.12pm (NZ time) in the Santa Cruz Islands at a
depth of 33km.
MCDEM and scientific advisors are in the process of assessing the situation to determine the severity of the threat to New Zealand. Updates will be issued
“Napier Civil Defence will release further information if the situation changes,” Napier City Council Community Resilience and Communications Manager, Marcus Hayes-Jones says.
