Ericsson Chooses Porirua – New Jobs to Come

Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett says Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson’s decision to open a new production facility in Porirua is fantastic!

“This will bring 30 new jobs to our city now and offer roles in both production and product innovation and development. At a time when there’s an economic recession Porirua’s economy has held pretty firm and we’re really pleased to add Ericsson to the successful businesses that operate out of Porirua.

“It’s great these are new jobs and not just movement from elsewhere in the country and we look forward to a long and productive relationship with Ericsson.”

Mayor Leggett says Ericsson selected Porirua because of its central location in the country and because their needs were able to be accommodated in the former Mitsubishi car plant at Todd Park.

The 10,000-square metre facility will manufacture fibre optic cable duct and is second only to Ericsson’s main factory in Sweden.

The fibre Ericsson produces is a critical component in the Ultra Fast Broadband Network and Rural Broadband Initiative deployments currently being rolled out.

“These projects and future regional demands for fibre could mean further job creation over the next few years and as innovation in fibre development progresses with changes in technology.”

The UFB rollout is expected to run until 2019. Ericsson is also looking to export ducting to Australia and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific.

“Ericsson is a global icon and we’re really proud to have them based here in our city. They have a reputation for being innovative and good employers and their commitment to minimizing their carbon footprint was another key driver to setting up in the Southern Hemisphere.”
