Help green our Ōhope stream

Help green our Ōhope stream

For immediate release: 7 August 2013

All willing volunteers are invited to come and join Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa’s mauri enhancement programme with a planting day in Ōhope this Sunday.

This is a great opportunity for the public to be involved to improve an important waterway flowing through Ōhope. After planting, hungry workers will be rewarded with a delicious sausage sizzle.

Maungateone (Miller’s Stream) has suffered over the past five years as some extreme rain events have taken their toll.

Ngāti Awa are kaitiaki, or guardians of their traditional lands around Ōhope. Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa operate the 1200 hectare Ngāti Awa Farm in Ōhope, farming dry stock cattle and sheep with some production forestry.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa are retiring large areas of Ngāti Awa farm from stock grazing particularly around streams and steeper areas prone to erosion. Ngāti Awa is working with the assistance of the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and Whakatāne District Council building erosion control structures in streams and undertaking extensive native plantings.

Sunday’s planting will add another 7,500 plants (Flax, Manuka, Cabbage Tree, Tree Lucerne, Karamu, Lemonwood, Kohuhu and Pittosporum) to the area. The planting site will be ready, with holes pre-dug and plants laid out ready to be placed in the ground.

When:                                 Sunday 11 August 10:00am – 1:00pm
Where to meet:               Maungateone (Miller’s Stream), Ngati Awa Farm (66 Pohutakawa Ave, across from the old Mobil Station)
What to bring: Warm clothing, appropriate footwear, drinking water
