Wairarapa UCOL carpentry students raise the roof

Wairarapa UCOL’s latest house building project will be celebrated with a traditional ‘roof shout’ laid on by major sponsor Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton on Tuesday.

The event celebrates the building progress of UCOL’s second house. There will also be a cheque presentation to the benefactors of last year’s charity house build, the Asthma foundation and Life Flight Trust.

Twelve UCOL Certificate in Carpentry students have been constructing the three bedroom house under UCOL’s custom-designed covered facility at the Masterton campus. UCOL National Certificate in Joinery students will also work on the house this semester.

“The house-build is proving to be a great learning outcome for current students and a vehicle to showcase what we can offer here in trades training,” says UCOL’s Construction Programme Coordinator Brett Tickner.

Built under the watchful supervision of Carpentry lecturer Peter Vanderveen, the wooden framed house features an ensuite and ‘lifetime’ design. “It is suited for homeowners of all ages,” says Brett.

Run in conjunction with Mitre 10 MEGA Masterton and the Dugdale Charitable Trust, the UCOL building ventures are regarded as highly valuable community projects with many local and national suppliers showing their support with services and products.

“Our trades students get to work on a full scale construction job and the sponsors and industry partners get a platform to showcase their products and services. It’s a real win-win situation,” says Brett.

The Life Flight Trust and Plunket will each benefit from the proceeds of the house sale. The house will be auctioned on site in November.
