Jackson Street homicide investigation update

Jackson Street homicide investigation update

A 43-year-old man has appeared in the Hutt Valley District Court this morning and has been remanded in custody on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and burglary.

The family of the victim have been advised and Police can now release the name of the victim.

He was 25-year-old Alonsio Iafeta MATALASI, known as Sio, who lived at the Jackson Street flats in Petone.

His family have asked for privacy and, at this stage, do not want to be contacted by the media. His family have also asked Police to reiterate that Mr MATALASI did not have any gang affiliations.

Police are continuing a scene examination at the Jackson Street flats, the Newlands address and of a vehicle located there. This is expected to take several more days.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says "I continue to reassure the community that they should feel just as safe as they did before this incident occurred".

"The two men connected with this incident have been arrested by Police and put before the Courts. Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to this inquiry."

Anyone with any information should contact Hutt Valley Police on (04) 560 2600. Anonymous information can be provided by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
