At 10.45pm on Wednesday
28th August, Hawkes Bay Police responded to a call at
Sanders Ave, Napier. Family members were concerned about the
safety of the single male occupant. Upon arrival Police
entered the address and were confronted by a man wielding a
large kitchen knife. He threatened the officers who
immediately retreated.
The 30 year old man then
barricaded himself in his home. He threatened to detonate a
home- made bomb.
Police secured the area, evacuating
Sanders and Logan Ave residents. Police communicated with
the man until 4.30 am when he voluntarily walked out of his
home. A Wellington bomb squad team are checking the
residence. Once this is cleared residents will be allowed
back into their homes.
Police are particularly grateful
for the assistance of the Hawkes Bay Salvation Army support
team, Fire service and ambulance staff who provided
support.
