Arrest over fatal dog attack

Arrest over fatal dog attack

Waitematä Police have charged a 52 year-old man in relation to the dog
attack in which 31 year-old Chloe Mathewson was killed.

Miss Mathewson died after she was mauled by two Rottweiler dogs during a visit to a Redvale property on Friday 29 March.

The North Shore businessman has been charged under the 1996 Dog Control Act with two counts of owning a dog that causes serious injury.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of 3 years imprisonment.

"This has been a lengthy and thorough investigation. It is a rare case that ultimately had tragic consequences for the Mathewson family.

We've spoken with Chloe's family this morning and talked them through the
charges" says Detective Inspector Greg Cramer, Waitemata Police.

The two dogs were destroyed several hours after the attack. Waitematä Police and Investigators from the Organised & Financial Crime Agency of New Zealand (OFCANZ) executed a search warrant on the businessman's Redvale property this
morning.

He has also been charged with a series of drug dealing offences, including supplying and possession for supply of 15 litres of GBL (Class B), and possession for supply of 1.7 kilos of the methamphetamine precursor pseudoephedrine.

The drugs were found hidden in a commercial storage unit in Takapuna, North Shore. He will appear in the North Shore District Court this afternoon.

As part of the OFCANZ investigation, two other men have also been charged; a 55 year-old unemployed North Shore man is facing a series of possession and supply charges and will appear in the North Shore District Court this afternoon.

A 36 year-old unemployed Pakuranga man will appear on a charge of possession of GBL (Class B) for supply.
