Bring out your dead TV’s on Saturday
The Government’s TV TakeBack is coming to Gisborne this month. With the digital switch over looming people may choose to upgrade their television. TV TakeBack is a Government initiative supported by Gisborne District Council to encourage people to recycle their old TVs, diverting them from landfill.
For a short time you will be able to take advantage of a Government subsidy and recycle your old TV for a minimal cost. Gisborne TV TakeBack days will be held at the Railway Yard in Grey Street between 9am and 3pm on Saturday 14 and 28 September and 12 October. The cost is a gold coin.
TV TakeBack for rural residents is through rural transfer stations. TV’s can be taken to a transfer station during the hours they are open from now until 4 October. The cost is one blue rural rubbish sticker.
You don’t need a new TV to go digital. You can re-use older TVs by purchasing a UHF receiver like Freeview. However, if you want to buy new it’s a good idea to dispose of your old television responsibly and save money by recycling it through TV TakeBack. TVs contain many materials that can be re-used into new products, as well as materials like lead that can be hazardous to our health and the environment. They shouldn’t be dumped in landfills or into the environment, but recycled responsibly.
There is a cost to recycle a TV as the value of the materials is currently less than the cost of transport and recycling.
Another initiative to keep TVs out of landfills is the Enviroschool TV TakeBack challenge. The school recycling the most TVs, based on roll, could win an IT package. Spot Prizes will also be on offer so it is worth getting involved.
The
Government has partnered with a range of recyclers,
retailers, and councils to provide a nationwide network to
collect and recycle unwanted TVs.
Once collected, TVs are
dismantled in specialist facilities and components are
reused in the following ways:
• Glass can be
recycled overseas into new products.
• Metals
such as steel can be melted down and made into new
products.
• Copper wire is removed and can be
recycled in New Zealand.
• Circuit boards are
recycled overseas.
• Aluminium is removed and
can be recycled in New
Zealand.
