Donovans Chocolates Unveil A Uniquely ‘Kiwi’ Carving

As the world unites to celebrate chocolate tomorrow (13th September), Donovans Chocolates has made every chocolate loving New Zealanders’ dream come true.

In celebration of International Chocolate Day, the Waikato chocolate makers are revealing a life-sized kiwi carving created entirely from their delicious chocolate.

The proudly New Zealand owned company believe the creation is the first life-size chocolate kiwi carving ever made.

The completely edible 50cm 3D masterpiece took Matthew Smith, an award-winning sculptor and a tutor at the Auckland based North Shore International Academy, nearly two weeks to create using a whopping 40kg of solid dark 60% cocoa Donovans chocolate.

After International Chocolate Day the special kiwi, who is yet to be named, will be looking for a chocolate-loving new home and is now up for auction on Trade Me. All proceeds will be donated to Kiwis for kiwi, a charity committed to protecting New Zealand’s national bird.

"We're so thrilled to be chosen as the recipient charity to auction the exceptional carving as we love all kiwi, even the chocolate variety!” says Kiwis for kiwi Executive Director, Michelle Impey.  “Our goal is to get every New Zealander interested in saving our native bird and every dollar helps.”
This is the first time Donovans has celebrated International Chocolate Day and the decision to create a life-size chocolate kiwi was an easy one.

“We wanted to celebrate this day with a fun yet outrageously big chocolate carving and after finding someone up to the task of making our idea a reality, a carving of a kiwi was an obvious choice,” says Donovans Brand Manager, Amy Paterson. “Donovans is a proud kiwi business and we wanted to reinforce that by creating an iconic chocolate carving of our national bird.”
