Northburn Station Competes In Global Winery Tourism Awards

October 8 2013: Central Otago’s Northburn Station will benchmark itself against leading wine ventures in Bordeaux, Tuscany and Napa Valley after receiving double honours in the international Best of Wine Tourism Awards, winning the New Zealand 2014 Wine Tourism Restaurant and the Architecture and Landscapes categories.

The Best of Wine Tourism Awards are spearheaded by the Great Wine Capitals network, which was founded in Bordeaux to bring together prestigious wine regions around the world to enhance their economic, educational and tourism projects.

In New Zealand Christchurch has been identified as a central hub of the global network combining the five South Island regions of Marlborough, Nelson/Tasman, Waipara Valley, Canterbury and Central Otago. The annual Best of Wine Tourism Awards offer South Island wineries and wine related businesses a chance to compete against the world’s best.

The 2014 awards won by Northburn Station cement previous successes in the New Zealand arm of the competition, after it took out the Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences award in both 2012 and 2013.

“This year we entered the wine tourism restaurant and the architecture and landscapes categories because we considered Northburn Station is now well established and able to compete with other South Island high profile wineries in both sections,” says Paul Tudgay General Manager of Northburn Station. “We are delighted with the joint win and the recognition reinforces our commitment to quality at all levels of our operation.”

The Shed winery restaurant at Northburn Station offers a farmgate dining experience with much of the food grown on the property, including vegetables and herbs, olives, almonds and walnuts, berries, stone fruit and Merino lamb.

“Our menu, with its focus on organic and locally sourced food, has a lot of appeal and we believe this has contributed to our win, along with the distinctive atmosphere and vibe we have created at The Shed.”

The architecture and landscapes award is a reflection of the hard work and vision of Northburn Station owners, Tom and Jan Pinckney.

“The Shed blends superbly with the surrounding landscape and it is a credit to the Pinckneys that the Best of Wine Tourism judging panel has recognised their efforts to produce such an idyllic and picturesque setting for visitors to Northburn Station,” says Tudgay.

As a regional winner Northburn Station will now compete at the International Best of Wine Tourism Awards to be decided by an international jury during the Great Wine Capitals Conference in Napa Valley California from November 3-7.

“This is an outstanding opportunity to benchmark Northburn Station against some of the leading wine places in the world. We are already aware that by being part of the global network and tourism awards we will further increase our profile and our connections internationally,” says Tudgay. “It is an exceptional chance for us to raise awareness of both Northburn Station and the Central Otago wine tourism industry.”
