Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori says that the campaign is a ‘whakaaro rangatira’ that it would like to see emulated in other communities.

Acting CE Pita Paraone says “the campaign supports the proposed Māori Language Strategy of the Government that mandates bilingual signage, more use of te reo in the IT sector, and for iwi to lead their own language initiatives.”

“This campaign will provide leadership for the wider use of te reo Māori. The role of TTWh is to support iwi where we can.”

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori has experience translating bilingual signs for businesses; developing terms for new technology; and have distributed te reo Māori resources to many communities.

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori will arrange to meet members of Tauranga te Reo.

“In the meantime, we will provide resources to support the kaupapa,” says Mr Paraone.

“With Tauranga Moana leading the way, we can see a time where this type of initiative is shared by the rest of Aotearoa.”
