Kaikoura Water Management Zone Committee Meeting

Media release
Monday May 26, 2014

Kaikoura Water Management Zone Committee Meeting
The Kaikoura Zone Committee will meet on Wednesday, 28 May, for its monthly water management public meeting.

The meeting will begin with contributions from members of the public before it receives updates from the committee’s working groups.

The recent focus for the zone committee has been on working with the community and councils to implement the recommendations made in its water management Zone Implementation Programme.

Key priorities for the committee include engaging youth in water management, implementing catchment management solutions and biodiversity work programmes, and working with the community to clean-up Lyell Creek / Waikoau.

Next, the zone committee will receive an update on its Immediate Steps biodiversity funding programme which aims to protect ecosystems and habitats to conserve indigenous freshwater diversity. Zone committees decide the priorities for each zone and distribute the funding, which also requires a third party contribution.

At the meeting the committee will consider two projects to undertake planting, weeding, and fencing to protect and enhance the biodiversity values of two local waterways. The committee still has almost $400,000 to allocate to local biodiversity projects.

The committee will finish the meeting by reviewing the first draft of the Kaikoura Zone Supplement for the Wai Water series. Wai Water is a community awareness and education publication, which underpins the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) and is linked to its targets and principles. It is aimed at communities including schools and wider community groups interested in water management.

Following the conclusion of the public meeting, the committee will meet for a workshop to discuss nutrient allocation zones, water quality and river data, and good farm management practices.

The Kaikoura zone committee was launched in mid-2011 as a joint committee of the Kaikoura District Council and Environment Canterbury. Monthly zone committee meetings are open to the public, and people are given the opportunity to contribute to the meeting, if they wish.
