New playground for Myers Park
New playground for Myers Park
Construction is underway on a new playground in historic Myers Park in central Auckland.
The existing playground has been closed and is being dismantled, to make way for an exciting new collection of play equipment.
Waitemata Local Board chair Shale Chambers says Myers Park is recognised for its historical significance, as an inner city ‘green lung’ and for its importance as a place for local residents and children.
“It remains a hidden gem of an inner city park that the local board and Auckland Council wishes to see once again come into its own, to the squeal of childish delight,” he says.
The new playground will feature a climbing structure, a giant swing birds nest, large and small spinners and swings, a slide and giant stylised flowers. It will open later this year.
This project also includes an upgrade to the park’s lighting, improving closed circuit television coverage and new plantings including seasonal bulbs and natives.
“The construction underway and the future implementation of the park’s development plan will set Myers Park up to serve our growing and changing city centre community for the next 100 years,” says Mr Chambers.
This work will be complete in time for centenary celebrations in 2015.
