Person missing on Lake Lyndon - update

Tuesday, 16 September 2014 - 9:56am

Canterbury Police Search and Rescue are continuing the search today for a person who went missing on Lake Lyndon yesterday and will be joined by Police Divers from Wellington later this morning.

Two people were fishing from an inflatable boat on the lake yesterday. One swam to retrieve the boat when it floated away while they were preparing to leave. The person is not believed to have been wearing a lifejacket when they entered the water and was last seen on the surface of the lake approximately 100m from the shore.

At the time of the incident the weather was fine but started to deteriorate later. Water temperatures in Lake Lyndon are typically 5-7 degrees at this time of year.

An aerial search of the lake and surrounding land yesterday did not result in any sightings of the missing person.

Police will not be releasing any details of the missing person until next of kin have been advised. Victim Support assistance has been offered to the family.

Canterbury Police and the Police National Dive Squad urge everyone to be aware of the water temperature, wear a lifejacket and think safety before going on, near or in the water.

Police are not making any further comment at this time.
