Wanaka Community Pool reopening

Wanaka Community Pool will reopen next Saturday, 27 September, with free entry and fun activities for the day.

The pool has been closed for two months so the building could be strengthened to meet the earthquake provisions of the building code.

Mayor Vanessa van Uden said that the reopening would be welcome news for the Wanaka community. “We know that regular swimmers have missed their community pool, and we’re very pleased to be able to reopen the facility on schedule, knowing that it now meets the earthquake code.”

She thanked the Central Otago District Council for being a “good neighbour” and welcoming Wanaka swimmers to the Cromwell pool over the last two months.

QLDC will be starting consultation with the Wanaka community next month over options for new swimming facilities. The Council will consider the options at an extraordinary Council meeting on 9 October, and then invite ratepayers and residents in the Wanaka ward to give their views. A decision on location, size, standards and timing of a new facility will be made in time for the project to be included in the 2015-25 Ten Year Plan.

Meanwhile, there is an open invitation to everyone who has been missing the pool to come along next Saturday.

To celebrate the reopening, Paddles the QLDC pool mascot will be hosting a pool party from 11am – 4pm, with free entry, a sausage sizzle, music and a range of inflatables, pool toys and games.
