Police and emergency services
are still at the scene of a fatal head-on crash that
happened at approximately 12pm today on SH79, the
Geraldine-Fairlie Highway.
Police confirm that the
deceased is a female tourist. A male and female tourist are
being flown to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.
A man has also been taken to Timaru hospital by road and is
described as being in a moderate condition.
Police
investigations are ongoing into the cause of the crash and
Canterbury’s Serious Crash Unit is currently making its
way to the scene.
SH79 is still closed between Geraldine
and Fairlie and diversions are likely to remain in place for
some time.
The death has been referred to the
coroner.
No names will be released until next of kin have
been fully informed.
A further update is not likely to be
made until
tomorrow.
