Leading legal conference win for Auckland

Leading legal conference win for Auckland

More than 600 lawyers will experience Auckland in 2017 after a successful joint bid to host the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) Annual Meeting and Conference.

Auckland Convention Bureau (ACB) – part of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) – and Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) worked with the IPBA to secure the hosting rights.

ACB Manager Anna Hayward says the five day conference is the leading legal event in the Asia Pacific region for business lawyers and will create substantial economic benefits for Auckland.

"The event is expected to generate $1.047 million to Auckland’s regional GDP and 2,705 visitor nights,” says Mrs Hayward.

Denis McNamara, Chairman of the IPBA New Zealand organising committee, says this conference is an important opportunity for New Zealand’s legal fraternity to network with peers visiting from around the world, and to showcase Auckland as a destination to an international audience.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to host this international conference and are confident that Auckland and the organising committee will put on an outstanding event.”

“Auckland went up against bids from Manila and Shanghai and ultimately the total package of a great destination and a highly polished bid made all the difference when delegates decided.”

“The 2017 conference has also been carefully timed to enable international delegates to enjoy a late-summer holiday or to experience the 2017 World Masters Games which is being held at the same time,” says Mr McNamara.

TNZ International Business Events Manager Bjoern Spreitzer says this is a great example of the New Zealand conference industry coming together to secure another international conference for New Zealand.

"A conference of this size presents significant value to the country and we want to continue bidding to bring more of these high-value international delegates to New Zealand.”

“Working alongside the New Zealand IPBA organising committee and ACB to secure a leading legal conference is exactly the result we are seeking from our work in the sector," says Mr Spreitzer.

Mrs Hayward adds, "the ACB team will continue to work with the local host committee to ensure a successful conference and help international delegates enjoy everything that Auckland has on offer.”
