Sky Show fireworks 2014 – a perfect night ahead

A fine evening with light winds is expected to draw at least 100,000 people on to the Wellington waterfront and hillside vantage points for the 20th Sky Show fireworks extravaganza tonight.

The 12-minute show starts at 9pm.

Artistic pyrotechnic designer of PyroStar International, Robert McDermott, will again curate an amazing display, launched from barges anchored in the inner harbour.

Fireworks fans are urged to walk in to town or take public transport to avoid the heavy traffic traditionally associated with the event.

Oriental Bay Parade and Evans Bay Parade will be closed to traffic from 7pm to 10pm, while a one-way traffic system will operate on Alexandra Road to the summit of Mt Victoria – one of the most popular viewing spots. The City Council will close the road to traffic when all parking spots are taken up.

If you'd like to hear the synchronised soundtrack during the show, tune into The Hits (90.1 FM) or ZM (90.9FM).

There will be food vendors and family entertainment along the waterfront as well.

The Wellington Sky Show, organised and paid for by the Council with the support of sponsors, has been an annual highlight since 1995.

Additional train services

Extra carriages will be added on existing scheduled services post and pre event to cater for increased demand.

Some extra services will also be available on the following lines at these approximate times:
Kapiti Line Departing Wellington at 9.45pm
Hutt Valley Line Departing Wellington at 9.50pm
Johnsonville Line Departing Wellington at 9.47pm
Johnsonville Line Departing Johnsonville to Wellington at 8.00pm.
