Mayor saddened by sudden death of Councillor Tony Lloyd

Mayor Ross Church has paid tribute to Councillor Tony Lloyd who passed away in the early hours of yesterday.

Councillor Lloyd died in Wellington hospital after suffering a stroke following scheduled surgery.

“It is with the greatest sadness that I acknowledge Tony’s passing. He was a dedicated and hard-working councillor who was a strong advocate for the Waikanae ward and for the goals and aspirations of the wider Kapiti district. Our thoughts are with Jill and the family.”

Councillor Lloyd was serving his second term as a Kāpiti district councillor after serving 15 years on the Waikanae Community Board. He was chair of Council’s Appeals Committee.

"Tony was the perfect choice for chair of the Appeals Committee because of his caring, calm, considerate manner. He was such a gentleman and the ideal man to make decisions that required consideration and compassion.

“Tony’s untimely death has rocked us all. He was popular around the Council table as well as in the community and he will be sadly missed,” said Mayor Church.

Chief Executive Pat Dougherty said council staff would also miss the steady influence of Councillor Lloyd. “Tony treated everyone with courtesy and consideration. He had a great sense of humour and a ready smile. Tony made a huge contribution to Waikanae, in particular and his premature passing is a great loss.
