Ruapehu District Council Pools Ready for Summer

Council Pools Ready for Summer

Ruapehu District Council’s (RDC) public swimming pools in Taumarunui, Ohakune and Raetihi are getting ready to open next month for the summer season which lasts until early March next year.

Taumarunui pool is scheduled to open on Saturday 6th December and Ohakune and Raetihi pools a week later on Saturday 13th December.

RDC Property Team Leader, Rebecca van Orden, said that there was always a lot to be done in getting the pools ready to open.

“Filling the pools, getting the chlorine levels correct and general ground and building maintenance all take a lot of preparatory work.”

“Everything is currently going to plan and we are looking forward to a great summer season.”

“Keeping admission prices as low as possible is important to council and as such entry fees have been kept the same as last summer; $2 for adults (17 years +) and $1 for everyone else.”

“Season tickets are also available which are $50 for an adult and $40 for a child which may suit people who like to swim regularly.”

Mrs van Orden added that an exciting development this season is that it is the first full summer that the Raetihi pool will be heated with its new solar system.

“The solar heated water temperatures will not be a ‘spa bath’ experience but should be noticeably warmer than the water temperature in the pools last summer.”

“Not only will the heating of the Raetihi pool increase its recreational value but it will enhance the ability to teach our kids to swim and give them water safety skills.”

Mrs van Orden said that the pool opening hours are; 3.00pm to 6.00pm Monday to Friday and 12.00 noon to 6.00pm Saturday and Sunday during the school term, and 12.00 noon to 6.00pm Monday to Sunday over the school holidays.

“The pools are closed on public holidays except for Anniversary Day and Waitangi Day.”

“Lifeguards are always on duty however children eight years or younger must always have a swimming buddy at least 18 years of age with them.”

“If people want any more information on the pools they can call their local council office or see council’s website www.ruapehudc.govt.nz,” she said.
