54 per cent of submissions favour enhanced transport network

54 per cent of submissions favour enhanced transport network with one week to go

With one week to go before the consultation on Auckland’s 10-year budget closes, more than 8000 submissions have been received and the final push for as many Aucklanders to have their say is underway.

Along with deciding on rates and investments, Aucklanders are being asked if they would choose to stick with investing in a basic transport network or whether they are prepared to pay more for the enhanced, fully-integrated network set out in the Auckland Plan.

Of the responses to date, 54% are in favour of the Auckland Plan transport network and 26% support the basic option.

On the question of how to pay for the enhanced network, 34% support a motorway charge and 29% favour a fuel tax and rates rise.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown says that with time running out, it is time to speak out and ensure your voice is heard.

“There are just a few more days left for Aucklanders to have their say on Auckland’s future,” he says.

“We know that we need to get these decisions right and that’s why we need as many people as possible to have had their say before the consultation closes next week.

“We need action to fix our transport and only by getting involved can you be sure that your opinion is heard.”

There are a number of ways to feedback including an online feedback form found at shapeauckland.co.nz, a hard copy form (found in council libraries, service centres and local board offices), using social media and at the ‘have your say’ events.

24 ‘have your say’ events have taken place across Auckland to date, with more scheduled for this week. The events replace traditional hearings and give people the opportunity to give verbal feedback on regional and local issues.

Decision makers, such as councillors and local board members, will be at the events to listen to the views of community members, with note takers recording the feedback given. To view ‘have your say’ event times and venues visit www.shapeauckland.co.nz/10yearbudget or phone 09 301 0101.

The consultation closes at 4pm on March 16, 2015.
