Going, going, gone – Pakuranga’s disappearing power poles

One hundred and ninety five homes in Pakuranga have been converted to the new underground electricity network as part of the AECT/Vector undergrounding programme underway in the area.

AECT Chairman, William Cairns said one of the ways the AECT makes a real difference to Aucklander’s lives is by supporting Vector’s programme to replace power poles with underground cables. Through an agreement with Vector, $130 million has been invested in the programme since it commenced.

The first stages of the year long Pakuranga project is completed with power poles removed from Cardiff Road, Carole Crescent, Elizabeth Street, Cindy Place, Rosina Place, and the southern end of Udys Road. Work is currently underway on the streets north of Reeves Road between William Roberts Road and Gossamer Drive.

The work completed so far has resulted in 130 poles and 4.5km of overhead line being removed. All up a total of 436 power poles and 15 kilometres of overhead lines will be removed by the time the project is completed.

Mr Cairns said he was delighted with feedback from local residents who were pleased with their new look street.

“The crews doing the work were inundated with baking after the poles came down in Udys Road – it’s fantastic to see such a positive reaction from local residents,” said Mr Cairns.
