Opening of new Canterbury Caledonian Society hall

24th June 2015

Opening of new Canterbury Caledonian Society hall

The next chapter in the Canterbury Caledonian Society’s 130 year history will begin on Saturday 27 June with the official opening of their new hall in Wigram, Christchurch.

An active member of New Zealand’s Scottish community, the Society has more than 400 members from Ashburton to Christchurch and as far north as Kaikoura

The events on 22 February 2011 destroyed the Society’s original hall on Kilmore Street in Christchurch, which was well used by members since it was constructed in 1923.

Since 2011, the Society’s pipebands, highland dancers and country dancers have continued to train and perform at a variety of venues in and around Christchurch.

The Society’s notable collection of historical and heritage Scottish items, including an ornate rams head snuff box and letters to members fighting in the war, have also been in storage until now.

Following a bespoke renovation to an industrial facility in the heart of Wigram, the Society will officially open their new hall with a ceremony featuring performances and entertainment from their members.

Media are welcome to attend the opening event, and images will be made available on request.
