Southern Police urging care on roads

Southern Police are urging all drivers to take extreme care on the roads during the winter season after a number of incidents across the district this week.

The southern region is having some very severe frosts this year and this includes stretches of highway where there is a large amount of black ice.

Black ice is not visible like a white frost; it is where water has frozen on the road and is virtually transparent.

Drivers are reminded to watch out for the black ice signs on the highways and reduce your speed accordingly.

Particular care is needed where trees have shaded the road and on bridges as this is where ice forms easily.

In times of fog, and at dawn and dusk, ensure headlights (not parklights) are on.

Ensure your windscreens and all windows are defrosted before setting out on your journey.

Also ensure the tyres on your vehicle are in good condition and carry chains where snow is forecast.
