Porirua Volunteers Recognised in Awards

Six Porirua volunteer groups were recognised for their valuable contribution to the community at a ceremony at Pataka on Friday night.

Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett congratulated the finalist organisations in the local round of the regional Wellington Airport Community Awards.

“Big congratulations and thanks to all the finalists and winners for the time and commitment they give to our people and city. They do an awesome job and make a big difference in many people’s lives in our city,” said Mayor Leggett.

The Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards, held in partnership with Wellington Community Trust and the five local councils, recognise the commitment and dedication of volunteers to community groups across the Wellington Region.

Wellington Community Trust trustee Liz Kelly said it’s always a pleasure to acknowledge and credit those who are doing outstanding work in the community.

“There’s a lot of good that goes on under the radar and this year we introduced a new “Rising Star” award to encourage new people and projects to be recognised. The winners in this category are a really good example of new initiatives in the community.”

She said the Trust had given over $40 million to 6000 recipients in the Wellington region over the past 25 years.

The Council region winners move through to the regional finals hosted by Wellington Airport in November.

Wellington Airport Brand & Innovation Manager Jo Maxwell said:

“It is a privilege to be able to recognise the many thousands of hours of community service, and the variety of activities that contribute to the wellbeing and culture of Porirua. We were thrilled with the record number of nominations and a high calibre of finalists across the region this year. We look forward to seeing the Porirua winners at the regional finals in November.”
