Shooting incident in Upper Hutt

Police confirms one person is dead following a shooting incident in Upper Hutt this afternoon.

Police received reports of a man armed with a firearm at around 12.40pm at the Upper Hutt McDonalds on Main Street.

When police arrived at the scene a man presented a firearm at police and was shot by armed staff.

Immediate medical attention was provided but he died a short time later.

No one else is being sought in relation to the incident and police reassures the community that they are able to safely go about their business.

No schools are affected.

Police are speaking to a large number of witnesses who were in the area at the time.

Police are still establishing details of exactly what happened and a full investigation into the incident is underway.

Further details will be provided in a media conference at Upper Hutt Police station at 4pm today.
