Find out more about the $45M Maungatapu underpass

The NZ Transport Agency is hosting two community information sessions this week so people can find out more about the Maungatapu underpass project.

The underpass will be built on State Highway 29A underneath the Maungatapu roundabout in Tauranga and will connect to Welcome Bay Road.

The project includes new cycle links and a cycle and pedestrian bridge above SH29A, with work set to start later this month.

The Transport Agency’s highway manager Nic Johansson says the underpass will separate state highway and local traffic, reducing congestion at peak times and making travel safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

“The project is a complex one on a busy road and will involve extensive traffic management and changes to the road layout,” he says.

“Contractors will be working between 9am and 4pm to minimise delays during peak times but we are going to need everyone’s patience and understanding during construction.

“We are encouraging people who want to find out more about the traffic management and other areas of the project to come to one of two information sessions this week.

“Transport Agency and project staff will be onsite to answer any questions people may have.”

The information days will be held at the Baden Powell Hall (39 Welcome Bay Road) from 2pm until 6pm on Friday September 11, and from 8.30am until 12pm Saturday September 12.

People can attend any time between these hours.
