Spectator apologises to victim following rugby verbal abuse

"Spectator apologises to victim following verbal abuse during Christchurch Senior Club Rugby Final"

Canterbury Police can confirm that one of the spectators responsible for verbal taunts and racial abuse during the Christchurch Senior Club Rugby Final at Rugby Park in July 2015 has been identified.

Detective Damon Wells says that the spectator has provided a personal apology to the victim. “Police will not be releasing any details about the person involved as this is a private matter between them and the victim. While no criminal charges will be laid regarding this matter it will be noted with Police in accordance to the wishes of the victim.”

“While the identities of the other individuals involved in the incident are not known at this time, Police will consider action against them in the event that they are identified. Canterbury Police have worked closely with Christchurch Football Club and Lincoln University throughout the investigation” explained Detective Wells.

“It is disappointing that some members of the crowd felt this type of behaviour was appropriate. Not only did their actions cause considerable distress to the victim, his family and teammates but it also spoilt the enjoyment of other spectators on the day. Racial abuse is not acceptable in any circumstance whether on or off the field.”

Canterbury Police would like to thank the public and the organisations who helped with this sensitive investigation.
