Youth Environment Team host Environment Expo

Youth Environment Team host Environment Expo

Following on from last year’s successful event, a full afternoon of activities is taking place at the Enviro Expo on Wednesday 23 September from 12.30 pm at Taradale High School.

This year sees several new opportunities for secondary school students to experience, including Measure your carbon foot print; a repurposing challenge from experts, 3R Reimagineers; Waging war on Codling moth; and an informative game about marine pollution.

A total of seven different activities will allow students to think, help, measure and learn about the environment says Sally Chandler, HBRC Community Engagement Coordinator, who is assisting with the coordination of this event.

“We are thankful to the experts who are giving up their time to share their knowledge with around 70 secondary school students who have registered to attend,” she says.

Taradale High School, is hosting the event, and their students will be getting down and dirty carrying out a Waste Audit. This simple exercise highlights what is being wasted and what should be recycled. When they carried out a waste audit earlier in the year, their results highlighted that up to 57% of their rubbish was actually recyclable. Have they improved? We will find out tomorrow.

For more information on the Youth Environment Council, please email enviro@hbrc.govt.nz. Year 11 – 13 students who would like to be part of this next year in 2016, are welcome to register now.
