Iconic Wellington architect firm engaged for new library project
Celebrated Wellington firm, Athfield Architects will be providing architectural and design services for the new $16.5 million Johnsonville Library project.
Johnsonville’s new library will be larger than the current library at 1,800 square metres and a flexible, modern library space providing the latest technology for visitors.
The new library will be located adjacent to Keith Spry Pool and Johnsonville Community Centre.
Councillor Sarah Free, Portfolio leader for Community Facilities says, “this is a fantastic opportunity to create an integrated community facility for the Johnsonville community”.
“Families will be able to enjoy the pool, a new modern library and community centre all in one visit”, she says.
Councillor Paul Eagle, Chair Community Sport and Recreation Committee, says, “this is a flagship development for the Council, that will make a real difference for the local community”
“We’re planning a smart, sustainable building which will provide a great precedent for future community projects”, he says.
The project’s first milestone, concept design is due to be completed by November 2015. Developed design will be completed by May 2016 and detailed design by September 2016. Construction will begin in 2017, and completion is planned for May 2018.
There will be opportunities for community input into the project. Community consultation will take place at each design stage.
