Making a Boaties’ Day in Safer Boating Week

Rocket parachute flares, smoke floats and lifejackets checks will make a fun day for boaties at the Boating Safety Week expo on Sunday 17 October.

There will also be the opportunity to win sailing lessons for a child, membership of Hawke’s Bay Sports Fishing Club and free lifejackets.

HBRC Harbourmaster Phil Norman has organised the one stop boat safety event in Spriggs Park at Perfume Point, Ahuriri, Napier starting at 2pm and ending around 6pm.

“There’s a fun aspect to this event, but the focus is definitely on safety for Hawke’s Bay boaties, and an opportunity to check they have good lifejackets, safety gear and communications on board before they head out this summer,” said Phil Norman.

Safer Boating Week is organised nationally by the Safer Boating Forum and runs from 16-13 October - http://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/Recreational-Boating/Safer-boating/.

At the Napier event, Hawke’s Bay Coastguard will demonstrate rocket parachute flares and smoke floats on the water around 5pm, and on land they will deploy hand held flares in a pyrotechnic display sponsored by Transport & Marine Ltd.

People can drive their boats into Spriggs Park for a free boat safety equipment check with Coastguard Hawke’s Bay.

Harbourmaster Phil Norman will be on site with information on boat safety regulations and lifejacket requirements, and Ministry of Primary Industries staff will be there to talk to people about fishing and shellfish gathering rules.
