Flag referendum options to fly in Capital today

The five flag options in the upcoming referendum will be hoisted in unison on the Wellington Town Hall from noon today.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown initiated the move, saying it allows the public to view the flags ‘in action’ and help make a more informed decision on the merits of each design for the flag referendum, to be held as a postal ballot in November.

“Flying the five alternatives as well as the current New Zealand flag provides an opportunity for Wellingtonians to compare each when they are fluttering in a brisk Capital breeze,” she says.

“We’ll be able to choose which of the designs looks best in action, instead of just in print, online or on screen. This will help the public make an informed decision about the choices in November.”

The flags in the referendum will be hoisted on the Civic Square side of the Wellington Town Hall at noon, Monday 12 October. The current New Zealand flag will continue to fly atop the Municipal Office Building in Civic Square.

Under the process set by the Government, New Zealanders can vote in a postal ballot in November to choose their most preferred design, and a second referendum in March 2016 would pit the winning design against the current flag.
