Vehicle involved in Whakatane crash was stolen

The man arrested following a crash in Whakatane this morning (Monday, 12 October) is a 23-year-old man from Taupo.

A police patrol vehicle attempted to carry out a routine traffic stop at approximately 7.20am near Edgecumbe when the vehicle failed to stop.

It crashed at the SH30 Coastlands roundabout a short time after road spikes had been deployed by police.

Police have since confirmed that the vehicle he was driving was stolen from Taupo over the weekend.

The 23-year-old man who is in custody is expected to appear at Whakatane District Court tomorrow.

The charges he will face are still to be confirmed.
