Children’s charities to benefit from Round the Bays 2016

Children’s charities to benefit from
Ports of Auckland Round the Bays 2016

Five official children’s charities are set to get a helping hand as entries open for the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays 2016 event on Sunday 6 March 2016.

Babies born with congenital heart defects, child victims of abuse and violence, and food education courses for children are among the main beneficiaries of the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays 2016 event.

CanTeen, SHINE, Heart Kids New Zealand, Garden to Table Trust and New Zealand Riding for the Disabled will each receive $10,000 towards their charity from donations generated by the event.

In addition to these charities, runners are encouraged to register and raise money for the cause of their choice through the Everyday Hero fundraising platform, as well as the well-received Gold Charity Programme.

Fairfax National Events Manager, Brett McMeekin says giving back and helping those in need in our community is an important aspect of the annual fun run.

“Participants support these charities just by registering for the event, and many will also run for other individual causes. We did a great job in 2015, but we want to beat the $250,000 we raised next year - and see even more participants get behind helping young Aucklanders in need.”

Ports of Auckland CEO Tony Gibson says he’s delighted with this year’s charity selection, and is looking forward to seeing everyone get behind these charities and make a difference.

“It’s our seventh year as naming rights sponsor of this event. We love that Round the Bays supports a range of initiatives that make a difference to children and young people in our city. The 2016 event is no exception, and the five charities each bring something special to a broad group of young Aucklanders.”

Now in its 44th year, the Auckland Joggers Club has seen the event evolve into one of the world’s biggest mass participation fun runs, where more than 30,000 people get together.

“It’s a great way to get out for some exercise and fresh air on a Sunday and we’re hoping to see many more families, friends, colleagues and teams joining us next year,” says Auckland Joggers Club President, Jude Sprott.
