Air link to benefit Wellington – and Aussie politics?

Wellington Mayoral Forum Chair and Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy has wholeheartedly welcomed today’s announcement of the new Wellington-Canberra-Singapore service by Singapore Airlines.

“This will be a game-changer for the region and central New Zealand both economically and from a position of pure convenience.

“I’ll certainly be using this new service – and I know many others who intend to take advantage of it both from a business sense and to make overseas travel easier for the general public heading into and out of this part of the country.

“When one of the world’s premier airlines does the numbers and decides to fly into Wellington then it’s a huge sign of confidence. Airlines aren’t known for making rash decisions…

Mayor Guppy says the announcement is also a major signal of international support for the proposed extension of the Wellington Airport runway. “A longer runway would make the business proposition even more attractive for the likes of Singapore Airlines.”

He also welcomes New Zealand’s first direct air link to the Australian capital city. “This will help bring the political leaders of both nations closer together. Thanks to Singapore Airlines, this may encourage exchanges of ideas that could greatly benefit Australian political stability and discourse.”
