Hutt Valley’s Bike the Trail fun for the whole family

Online registrations for this year’s Bike the Trail have been steady but there is plenty of room for more participants.

UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 19 FEB 2016— Once again, Upper Hutt City Council’s Activation team, Hutt City Council, and Greater Wellington Regional Council have been working together to host Bike the Trail for 2016.

Bike the Trail is a family-friendly cycling event that follows the Hutt River Trail from Harcourt Park in Upper Hutt to Hikoikoi Reserve in Petone. The event is an easy ride and a great way for families to bike together because the course is mostly flat and away from roads. Although the Hutt River Trail is publicly accessible all the time, Bike the Trail provides a great platform for exploring the course with friends and family and makes a good social outing.

The Hutt River Trail forms a section of the larger regional Rimutaka Cycle Trail—one of New Zealand’s Great Rides.

The Harcourt Park start point will also be hosting free bike safety checks from the team at Biketec. Les Mills Hutt City will be running a warm-up session with The Hits radio station providing music and announcements. Faultline Coffee will also be there for a last minute pick-me-up before embarking on a ride.

Bike the Trail is not a race and is not timed. Groups of about 50 people will set off at short intervals from 10.00 am to make sure everyone has enough room to ride together.

This year, participants will also go into a draw to win an Avanti Discovery 1 hybrid bike (worth $1,000) courtesy of Les Mills Hutt City and Avanti Plus Lower Hutt.

The full ride is from Harcourt Park to Hikoikoi Reserve—25 km—but event hosts are also facilitating a shorter 12 km ride which begins at the entrance to Stokes Valley. Motorised transport back to Stokes Valley and Harcourt Park will be provided free of charge for participants and their bikes.

Upon arrival at Hikoikoi Reserve, participants will be treated to live entertainment, games, and activities. There will also be a gold-coin barbecue and other refreshments for sale.

Bike the Trail is free to attend, however participants are encouraged to pre-register at www.bikethetrail.co.nz. This will ensure any required medical information and contact details for family members are on file. Participants can also register on the day.

There are also bikes available for hire, which can be requested as part of the registration.
