Glenda Drive Chemical Incident Update

Glenda Drive Chemical Incident Update

12.00pm

Specialist monitoring equipment to detect chlorine gas is being flown from Dunedin to the scene of a chemical incident at a commercial laundry in Glenda Drive, Frankton.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Andrew Bary from Queenstown said firefighters with breathing apparratus and protective equipment had ventilated the building and stabilised the container holding the chemicals.

When the monitoring equipment arrives, they will be able to assess whether it is safe for others to enter the building and return to adjoining premises. Until then, the 300m cordon was being maintained.

Police have established an exit route for people in the southern part of the Frankton industrial area, and there is restricted access into the northern part of Glenda Drive.

St John says that one man was taken to Lakes District Hospital as a precaution, after two chemicals were inadvertently mixed at the laundry.

Updates on any changes to the cordon and traffic will be posted on the Queenstown Lakes District Council website www.qldc.govt.nz, on Twitter @QueenstownLakes and QLDC Facebook page, as well as on local radio stations More FM and The Hits
