Blake Fund established for Wellington Region youth

Blake Fund established for the benefit of Wellington Region youth

5th April 2016

Nikau Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Blake Fund, a new endowment fund for the benefit of Wellington’s youth.

Philanthropist Barbara Blake approached the foundation for assistance when she was struggling with a decision on which community groups to support. Nikau Foundation provides the perfect vehicle for generous Wellingtonians wanting to make a difference to their community by managing endowments that makes grants in the donor’s name. The Blake Fund will support organisations that contribute to the health and well-being of young people, with an emphasis on young women (15-25), Māori, Pacific Island, migrants and lesbian/gay communities.

Ms Blake says "As a mother, I know that teenagers can be a bit tricky and can sometimes seem hard to reach. However I also know that with some perseverance, guidance and a firm push in the right direction at critical moments, young people will flourish and exceed all our expectations. They will make us proud and they will be proud of themselves. I am so excited to be part of the Nikau Foundation as an endowment fund donor and I can't wait to see the positive results of my investment in the young people of our community."

The fund will add $500,000 to Nikau Foundation’s investment pool of $5 million and will generate upwards of $20,000 in grants per annum in perpetuity for Wellington charities who meet the criteria. Applications to Nikau Foundation open in July this year for this fund and the other 20 endowment funds they manage.

Nikau Foundation General Manager, Louise Parkin says that working with Barbara on her family’s philanthropic legacy has been an absolute pleasure. “Nikau Foundation has an in-depth knowledge of Wellington charities so can assist donors like Barbara to set up their charitable giving without the hassle of creating their own trust and then guide the funds where they are most needed. Barbara involved her family in this important decision and is passing on the family tradition of generosity to the next generation.”
