No Tsunami threat to Auckland
Ministry of Civil Defence Emergency Management (MCDEM) advises there is no threat to Auckland following the tsunami threat this morning but strong currents are likely.
MCDEM also advise East Cape, Bay of Plenty and Gisborne have likely already experienced the maximum wave heights following this morning’s tsunami threat.
Train services between Newmarket and Britomart are being resumed while lines are reopened by KiwiRail.
The Newmarket to Britomart rail line was shut down by KiwiRail, the lines’ owner, as a precaution following the tsunami threat.
Auckland Civil Defence has activated its Emergency Control Centre and is monitoring the threat of tsunami waves following the 7.0 earthquake of East Cape this morning.
In line with Ministry of Civil Defence advice issued this morning, and while we are monitoring the situation, the following applies to Auckland’s EAST COAST, people should:
1. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
2. Stay off beaches and shore areas
3. Do not go sightseeing
4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
6. Follow instructions of local civil defence authorities.
