It’s not too late to have your say in local body elections

News media release

It’s not too late to have your say in local body elections

Voters need to be quick if they’re mailing in their votes for the Wellington Regional Council elections.

Voting closes at midday Saturday 8 October, but it’s not too late to cast a vote and help decide who’ll sit on the council.

Regional Council electoral officer Margaret Meek says “the elections are closing in a few days so ideally you should post your voting papers by Wednesday. If you miss that deadline you can still hand-deliver them to your local city or district council electoral officer to ensure that your vote can be counted.”

The Wellington Regional Council elections will be decided by the Single Transferrable Voting (STV) system. STV is also used for all District Health Board elections and three other councils in the Wellington region – Wellington City Council, Porirua City Council and Kapiti Coast District Council.

Under STV, voters rank candidates in order of preference. Voters may rank as many or as few candidates as they wish – there is no requirement to rank all candidates.
