Council celebrates capital’s golden oldies

Wellington City Council is working closely with Te Papa and a number of other organisations to celebrate Seniors Week in the capital from 10–16 October.

The week sees a number of tours, events, exhibitions, and activities happening around the city, all designed for older residents to get out and about, get active, and get engaged.

“Council has a strong focus on supporting activities that connect people of all ages with the wider community, and Seniors Week fits that vision perfectly,” says Mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

“Active participation promotes inclusive and healthy communities. Our senior citizens contribute to, and enjoy, the capital’s diverse culture.”

There are over 20 events happening over the week, most of which are free or discounted for Gold Card holders. These include:

· a concert by the Ukes of Wellington, plus tips from them at a workshop

· the chance to get up close and personal with the Central Library’s collection of rare books

· meeting the famous Hip-Operation dance crew, trying some of their moves, and hearing from their inspiring manager

· going behind the scenes of Parliament, National Library and Government House

· taking part in a dementia-friendly tour at Te Papa

· indoor bowls, tai chi, aqua classes, pickleball tournaments, an antiques show and tell, plus courses on safe driving and technology advice, and much more.

Te Papa will be hosting a number of events, and is proud to be involved again in this annual celebration of the city’s senior citizens.
