Wellington has highest voter turnout since 2001

The final vote count for this year’s Local Body election is in, with a total of 65,567 Wellingtonians voting.

Wellington City Council’s Chief Electoral Officer, Warwick Lampp, says 45.57 percent of the city’s eligible voters participated, which is its highest turnout for a Local Body election since 2001.

“Wellingtonians have confirmed their reputation of being a politically savvy bunch. Wellington came in with the highest voter turnout of the country’s four major centres. We had a real race for mayoralty – with three front runners in a tight battle for the top spot – I think this helped spark voters into making their vote count this year.”

Final results show newly appointed Mayor Justin Lester won by 7,224 votes over nearest rival Nick Leggett.

Onslow-Western was the ward with the most voter turnout with 52.73 percent of potential voters having their say. While Lambton was the ward that had the least voter turnout with 40.26 percent casting their vote.
