New Brighton ‘Tiny Huts’ are open

Visitors to New Brighton can trade art, climb a tower to admire the views, enjoy a cultural experience, play or just relax in the Tiny Huts which have been installed and are now ready to enjoy.

The ‘Tiny Huts’ are a play on English sea-side beach huts, each measuring 2m by 2m, have been placed in New Brighton's town centre to liven up the seaside suburb's public places over the summer.

David East, Councillor elect for the Coastal Ward, says, “The designs that were submitted for the Tiny Huts design competition were of amazing quality and the community was excited about the impact they would have on New Brighton.”

“It is great to see the Tiny Huts in place and the build partners have done a great job to deliver on the designer’s vision.”

The Tiny Huts:

Wharau – designed by Manaia Wilson-Moses and built by Naylor Love Construction Ltd

Art-omat – designed by Sasha Samardziska and built by Arrow International (NZ) Ltd

#MyBrightonHut – designed by Marike Uys and built by Miles Construction Ltd

The Turret – designed by Tessa Forde and Elena Lochore-Ward, and built by Southbase Construction Ltd

The Shell Chapel, designed by Ting Lin and being built by Leighs Construction, will be installed in November. Ting Lin, Leighs and the Council have been working to source the right materials to ensure a high quality and durable finished product.

All five Tiny Huts will be located either within the New Brighton Mall or in the public open spaces near the Library and Whale Pool.

Carolyn Ingles, Head of Urban Design, Regeneration & Heritage says, “There have been a lot of people involved in making the Tiny Huts a success. When the design competition launched earlier this year it was difficult to predict what the response would be like. We were overwhelmed with the entries and have had so much support from the designers, the build partners, community and many others that have contributed their time, expertise and enthusiasm along the way.

“The success of community projects is built on the energy put in by local people and the contributions we have had on this project have been fantastic.”

The local community will be taking care of the Tiny Huts over the summer. To find out more, including where each Tiny Hut has been installed, go to www.ccc.govt.nz/tinyhuts.
