Winton Stream effluent update

Winton Stream effluent update

People should continue to avoid contact with the Winton Stream, as Environment Southland compliance staff investigate a discharge of effluent into a tributary feeding the stream last week.

Compliance manager Simon Mapp says samples taken over the weekend indicate E.coli levels have decreased but remain high and people should not take any water from the stream or should boil it before use of any kind. They should also prevent dogs entering the stream or drinking from it.

Farmers using the stream for stock water need to be aware of the risk and make alternative arrangements.

Further test results are expected on Friday.
