Prices rise for Prime Cattle Competition

High quality stock saw prices rise at the All Prime Stock & Store Cattle Sale at Canterbury Park this week. Prizes were also awarded to vendors as part of the Canterbury A&P Show Prime Cattle Competition.

Organiser of the competition, Mick Withers from Rural Livestock was impressed by the standard of stock on sale.

Mr Withers said, “The competition saw a yarding of exceptional quality. It was great to see a wide range of breeds on display too: Limousin, Charolais, Hereford, Angus, South Devon and Speckle Park were all represented on the day. Prices were well up on the previous week’s sale with most place getters receiving from $3.30 per kg, to $3.50 per kg. This represented a return of up to $2,430 for the top priced animals.”

A Speckle Park steer entered by Seaton Farming won the single steer class while John McDrury had an outstanding day winning the Allflex Supreme exhibit along with Pair of Steers, 1st and 2nd in Single Heifer Class and 1st and 3rd in Pair of Heifers

Tuesday’s sale is the last prime cattle sale before the annual Canterbury A&P Show. Work has now commenced on preparing the saleyards for the influx of livestock, who will call the Vero Livestock Pavilion home for the three days of the Show.

This year’s 155th Canterbury A&P Show will be held Wednesday 15 to Friday 17 November at Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch. It’s the largest A&P Show in the country attracting 100,000 people, around 6,500 livestock and feature competition entries and 550 trade exhibitors.
