The biggest Christmas party is coming to town

Tuesday 21 November 2017

The biggest Christmas party is coming to town this weekend – and you’re all invited

Christmas is coming, and so is A Very Welly Christmas – the fun, fabulous and family-friendly festival which stretches along Lambton Quay is back again this weekend, and it’s even bigger and better than before.

The festival has something for everyone with highlights ranging from the Santa Parade and carol singing, to food trucks and face painting, to skating, snowballs and circus performers. The event will also showcase some of our best local acts and artists on stages along the route.

Mayor Justin Lester says this event is a great way to kick-off all the summer fun in the capital.

“The countdown to Christmas has begun, and it’s an exciting time of year for Wellingtonians, especially those with young families,” says Mayor Lester.

“Santa will obviously be a highlight for the kids, but there will be lots to see and do for everyone along the Golden Mile. Wellingtonians love seeing the city abuzz, and I’m looking forward to this weekend being exactly like that.”

The Santa Parade will be leaving at midday from Ballance Street to David Jones on both days of the event, but the festivities will be spread throughout the retail sector with a new initiative happening during shop hours. Very Welly Shopping will see local stores offering specials and discounts to everyone enjoying the two days of A Very Welly Christmas.

There’ll be a free crèche in Stout Street and gift wrapping services for donations on Johnston Street, as Christmas is also a time for giving, says City Events senior advisor, David Daniela.

“We’re pleased to be bringing A Very Welly Christmas back to the capital, with support from David Jones, and we’re proud to announce the Wellington Hospital Children’s Ward as our chosen charity for 2017. We encourage everyone to dig deep when they see the official collectors over the weekend – and spread a bit of festive cheer to some kids who really need it this Christmas,” adds David.

Lambton Quay from Whitmore Street to Willis Street will be closed for all traffic from midnight Friday 24 Nov to midnight Sunday 26 Nov.

The Traffic Management Team advise motorists travelling north along Willis St to avoid the section between Boulcott St and Lambton Quay. Motorists who choose to use this part of Willis St can expect significant delays due to the merge of Customhouse Quay and Jervois Quay.

Event attendees should consider using the Clifton Terrace carpark as this is accessible via The Terrace and is a short walk to the event on Lambton Quay.
