Kāpiti Will Benefit from Easter Sunday Trading

Kāpiti Will Benefit from Easter Sunday Trading

Friday 8 December 2017 - The entire Kāpiti region will benefit economically from the decision to allow Easter Sunday Trading from 2018.

The Kāpiti Coast District Council voted to allow businesses to open on Easter Sunday (if they choose) at a Council meeting on 7 December.

Julene Hope, Co-Chair of the Kapiti Coast Chamber of Commerce says the decision supports a strong local business economy, and is pleased the the Chamber has been instrumental in providing choice to local businesses.

“Giving businesses the choice to open on Easter Sunday will have economic benefits for the entire region, particularly after Porirua our closest neighbouring district chose to stay closed. It gives Kāpiti business the opportunity to provide shopping and entertainment activities for visitors and tourists to the district.

“It’s fantastic the Council has voted to allow business to open on Easter Sunday, this aligns Kapiti with the 25 other progressive District Councils around New Zealand who have already adopted a local Easter Trading Policy” says Julene Hope.

The Kapiti Chamber of Commerce said in its submission opening on Easter Sunday aligns with the Council’s Open For Business policy.

“We believe there are substantial protection measures in place to protect the rights of workers should they choose not to work on Easter Sunday; but business owners should have the choice to trade if they want to.

“The Chamber is available to help any local businesses who need advice about opening Easter Sunday 1 April 2018. Advice for employers and employees can be found on the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment website”.
