Tolaga Bay family to be airlifted off roof after flooding

Two adults and their four year grandchild were to be airlifted off the roof of their home at first light this morning after torrential rain north of Tolaga Bay overnight.

Tairawhiti Civil Defence Emergency Manager Louise Bennett said the couple living on the Mangatokerau Road, off Paroa Road, believed the water was receding when a loud noise preceded another surge in the river close to their home.

“They managed to get on to the roof of their house to await assistance. Tolaga Bay is the worst-affected area at the moment.”

The home of seven adults about eight kilometres up the Tauwhareparae Road had been flooded and the family was awaiting assistance.

Civil Defence and its Uawa Community Link groups had been activated.

Rivers in the Tolaga Bay area had risen rapidly since midnight. Civil Defence believe the rivers were close to their peak but more rain is forecast today.

The rain is also believed to have affected some residents this morning at Makorori Road and Okitu.

Motorists are advised to stay home unless travel is essential, and to check the roads before travel.
