MEDIA RELEASE 7 November 2018

Leighs Construction Outdoor Cinema returns to the Arts Centre of Christchurch, Te Matatiki Toi Ora

The beloved summer tradition of Leighs Construction Outdoor Cinema returns to the Arts Centre, Te Matatiki Toi Ora, for another sizzling season, starting 6 December 2018.

Films for all ages will be screened on two dates each summer month in the picturesque North Quadrangle – immersing cinemagoers in one of New Zealand’s landmark locations surrounded by stunning heritage buildings. Child-friendly family films will start at 5.30pm followed by movies for adults at 8pm.

Check the Arts Centre’s website (https://www.artscentre.org.nz/) for the movie line-up, which will be announced two weeks in advance.

Arts Centre chief executive Philip Aldridge said he was delighted Leighs Construction had created such a wonderful summer tradition with the Arts Centre.

“Leighs Construction Outdoor Cinema evenings are such special times. There is something magical about gathering people together in front of a wonderful film on a huge screen, surrounded by beautiful and much-loved heritage-listed buildings.

“These events epitomise what we do here at the Arts Centre, Te Matatiki Toi Ora – restore memories and create futures.”

Leighs Construction managing director Anthony Leighs said: “The Arts Centre is one of the most significant clusters of heritage buildings in New Zealand and Leighs Construction is proud to be helping to rebuild and restore it.

“Our support of the Summer Cinema is all about supporting the community to come along and enjoy this amazing facility. Encouraging people to experience the city’s heritage will help ensure its vibrant future.”

Cinema nights are on Thursday 6 and Friday 7 December 2018, Friday 18 and Saturday 19 January 2019 and Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February 2019.

Entry is by a gold coin donation, which will go directly toward the Arts Centre’s restoration programme. As an independent charitable trust, the earthquake-damaged centre relies upon donations, gifts and sponsorship to complete the enormous heritage project.

Space is limited, so cinemagoers are advised to arrive early to secure a spot and avoid disappointment.

Food and beverages will be available to buy, however please note that alcohol is not permitted in the quadrangle.

Please bring something to sit on – rugs are to be used on grassed areas, while chairs can be used on paved surfaces.
